“It is my honour to be invited to the book talk on the Chinese translation of Haruki Murakami’s books at the 4th I·CARE Book Festival of CUHK, and have Prof. Wai-ming Ng as the host. Prof. Ng’s immense knowledge, whimsical way with words and studies at Princeton University in the same period as Murakami’s teaching days there are all fascinating for me and readers, and give us new insights into the Japanese literary world. The talk was definitely a huge success. Here I want to thank Prof. Ng, and look forward to having more collaborations in the future.”

“Prof. Wai-ming Ng’s study on the interactions and collaborations between Hong Kong and Japanese music cultures has shed light on the development of our local music. To start off, he did a tremendous amount of interviews and research, and then categorized and analyzed them systematically, which allows us to delve deeper into Japanese music and its impact on Hong Kong. Deeply influenced by Japan in the 90s, Hong Kong’s music scene produced a number of hit songs that were cover, translated or adapted versions of the Japanese originals. Even though today’s Hong Kong popular songs are mostly created locally, the elements of Japanese popular music, especially those of music technology, have continued to inspire our musical artists. We also have intellectual exchanges and musical encounters with Japanese musicians from time to time. Not only has Prof. Ng’s research deepened our knowledge of Hong Kong-Japanese musical interplay and the local music scene, it also results in a musical synergy that is more productive and powerful than one pop taste might imply. Therefore, his research is an indispensable resource for us musicians.”

“Prof. Wai-ming Ng’s research work has proved to be an efficient catalyst for the growth of our local anime and manga culture. He has been playing his part in every interaction and collaboration between Hong Kong and Japanese cultures (and subcultures in the two places), collating data, pushing the conversation forward and preserving what is going to be forgotten. As a member of this ACG community, on this occasion, I would like to pay homage to Prof. Ng for his accomplishments and dedication!”

“I got to know Prof. Wai-ming Ng at an animation conference, where his expertise in Japanese ACG culture really impressed me. At that time, I was making an animated film created by Hong Kong filmmakers and produced in Shenzhen, and had the chance to hear Prof. Ng’s opinions on the animation production and what animation fans would hope to see. After completing the film, we held a preview screening for Prof. Ng and a group of students he had invited, which gave us very effective and useful reviews. Prof. Ng is a pillar of Hong Kong’s ACG industry and makes helpful comments in various cultural aspects. I hope we will have other opportunities to work together in the future.”

“Prof. Kinnia Yau, with her excellent language skills, specializes in East Asian comparative film studies which cover not only Japan, Hong Kong and China, but also East Asian regions like Korea and Taiwan. Prof. Yau and I share the same academic interests and background; over the years of our friendship, she has always explained in detail to me the differences, cultures and societies of many different East Asian regions. Having delivered lectures in The Chinese University of Hong Kong and places around the world, and published books and research papers that have been translated into different languages, she has earned a reputation for her contribution to a growing mutual understanding among the countries and peoples in this area, and deservedly so.”

“Japanese cinema forms an integral part of the cultural life of Hong Kong, and it is an important aspect of the study of popular culture. Professor Kinnia Yau is the only scholar in Hong Kong who has done extensive academic research on the history of Japanese cinema as well as its relationship with and comparison to Hong Kong cinema; her publications are key reference materials on these subjects. It was the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society’s pleasure to invite Professor Yau as a speaker for a film lecture on the cinema of Naruse Mikio, as part of our Cine Fan programme. Her knowledge and insights have enriched our programme, offering our audience stimulating perspectives in appreciating Japanese cinema.”

He has been teaching Japanese culture, history and all other fundamental aspects of Japan in university, with a deep understanding of the country and keen observation of the trends. We had the chance to meet with his students and sit in his lecture about Japanese etiquette and manners, and were really impressed. Here we wish to thank him for letting us join this class as guest lecturers. There were many enthusiastic students answering our questions, and not only did we pass on knowledge to them, we also got to immerse ourselves in the great teaching of Prof. Ng. “There are many ways to understand Japanese culture, but the decades-long ACG industry, which has become one of the most influential soft power currencies of Japan, is often overlooked. Among the people I know of, Prof. Wai-ming Ng is the most knowledgeable and open-minded person when it comes to Japanese culture. Reading comics is not easy to scholars, but seeing the essence of this culture is just much more difficult. Having such insights while never being limited by his own intelligence is what I admire most in Prof. Ng.”

“Prof. Wai-ming Ng’s detailed analyses on Japanese popular culture have expanded the public’s understanding of popular culture from the aspect of entertainment to its academic or social facets, drawing more young people to the relevant industries. This kind of exchanges of ideas and communications has been improving and promoting these industries, which is hugely inspiring to cultural industry workers. During the time when I worked as a dubbing director, such analyses on popular culture of Prof. Ng definitely helped me figure out how to deal with the mood and lines of an animation or a TV drama.”
